We give our neighbors at Texas State and in San Marcos a place to explore Christianity together, to receive spiritual mentoring, and to walk together in becoming more like our King Jesus. We’re figuring life out with each other, we take responsibility when we screw up, and we offer grace when others do too. That said, we also value the freedom in Christ to explore scripture and Christian tradition for oneself and to come to a faith that is one's own, and we don't believe that can truly be done under a pressure to assent to a particular proposition on threat of rejection. So we welcome anyone who wants to join us in learning the way of Jesus together, no matter what theological statements they do or don't agree with. For us, the creed is a melody to help us harmonize with each other, not a wall to delineate "us" vs "them". *(Some grammar and word choice has been updated from the liturgical texts to make it easier to understand in modern English while keeping as close as possible to the meaning of the original Greek)* We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made; came down from the heavens and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became human; and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate and suffered and was buried; and arose again on the third day according to the Scriptures; and ascended into the heavens and now sits at the right hand of the Father; and will come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; We agree over one baptism for the remission of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Our first priority is to make sure LGBTQIA people feel valued, safe, and protected. Hate will not be tolerated in our church. We believe there are multiple faithful ways to interpret the Bible on this topic, so we don't teach a particular doctrine, except that LGBTQIA people are loved by God. We believe that LGBTQIA people are loved by God and created in his image. They are fully deserving of love and respect from all people. We believe that it is more important for people to feel loved and accepted by God and his people than it is to hold any particular belief or practice about gender or sexuality. We recognize that faithful followers of Jesus hold to a variety of personal beliefs regarding gender and sexuality as well as interpretations of how Biblical teachings apply to these. Because of this, we do not expect everyone to share the same beliefs or interpretations, and we do not teach a particular stance as a church. This is a complex topic, so we encourage people to look into it through scripture and prayer and come to their own conclusions led by the Holy Spirit. We want our community to be a place where LGBTQIA people can feel safe and protected, and a place where we can ask questions and figure out life together as we follow Jesus. We know that many churches have hurt many people in the LGBTQIA community for decades and we want to give special attention and love to anyone who has been hurt. We don't think "Church" is an event that people come to, like a concert or a lecture; we see it as a found family of people who care for each other and work together to love the people around them like Jesus did. If that sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, come visit! You can learn more about the main things we do below! Homegroups are what we call our weekly small group meetings. Over the years, students have said that homegroup meetings are the highlight of their week and that the people in their homegroup have become like a second family to them — a home away from home. Our services typically consist of a time of worship — either through music, prayer, or some kind of alternative worship — and a teaching or panel discussion on a topic of Christian faith and what it means for our lives here on earth. While we firmly believe the work of the Church is the responsibility of each believer, the staff work to facilitate the ministry we all do as a part of 2.42. The staff team have all raised a financial support team through Reliant Mission ([reliant.org](http://reliant.org/)). If you'd like to financially support one of our staff (we appreciate that immensely!), you can find each of their Reliant support pages in their bios below. A human multiclassed Barbarian/Technomancer, Joshua Jarma often embodies opposites. He is intensely laid back, confidently insecure, and is skeptically hopeful. He loves his wife (Lisa) and two kids (Faith and Justice). Joshua is passionate about following Jesus's teachings and cares a lot about making sure people feel safe. He's also a part-time high school teacher and is a professional counselor in training. Emma Saenz initially joined 2.42 as a student in the fall of 2011 and has played a key role in our church's growth and community ever since. She loves connecting with others and is always up for a good cup of tea paired with good conversation (she is not British, tea is just delicious). Her heart is for every student at Texas State to know Jesus Christ and love each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. She wants to empower women to find their identity in Christ and support each other as the unique and beautiful women they are. When she has free time she enjoys board games, hiking, singing at the top of her lungs, and watching Psych for the 800th time. Lisa Jarma loves taking pictures (especially of her family) and loves to scrapbook them (currently at 1596 pages!).  As of June 2025 she has been married to her favorite guy Joshua for 20 years and deeply loves her two kids (Faith and Justice).  She works part time for 2.42 while also managing her household.  She loves Jesus and wants to share that with others while helping them feel safe, loved and included. Will Carter serves as 2.42’s Worship Director and go-to media guy. His desire is to help others experience the beauty of Jesus's teachings and create a safe place for them to explore what their faith means for them where they're at. He has a passion for his wife (Kamarie), music, good tea, video games, and nerdy conversations about… well anything really. Allen is a manly-man of God: a woodworker, beard-enthusiast, and borderline hipster. He loves his wife, his dogs, and his job. Allen did not grow up Christian, but found God in high school and grew his faith in college. He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in computer engineering, but his love for God and college students outweighed his curiosity and love for tinkering, so he decided to go on staff to help share God's love with students. Allen dislikes pickles, the idea that Christmas can only be celebrated in December, and the lie that pizza rolls are an adequate substitute for pizza. Jesus' church is bigger than each of us and bigger even then 2.42 church, and Sunday services are a little glimpse of that beautiful vision of unity! Our services tyically consist of a time of worship — either through music, prayer, or some kind of alternative worship — and a teaching or panel discussion on a topic of Christian faith and what it means for our lives here on earth. Hate will not be tolerated in our church. We believe there are multiple faithful ways to interpret the Bible on this topic, so we don't teach a particular doctrine, except that LGBTQIA people are loved by God. We believe that LGBTQIA people are loved by God and created in his image. They are fully deserving of love and respect from all people. We believe that it is more important for people to feel loved and accepted by God and his people than it is to hold any particular belief or practice about gender or sexuality. We recognize that faithful followers of Jesus hold to a variety of personal beliefs regarding gender and sexuality as well as interpretations of how Biblical teachings apply to these. Because of this, we do not expect everyone to share the same beliefs or interpretations, and we do not teach a particular stance as a church. This is a complex topic, so we encourage people to look into it through scripture and prayer and come to their own conclusions led by the Holy Spirit. We want our community to be a place where LGBTQIA people can feel safe and protected, and a place where we can ask questions and figure out life together as we follow Jesus. We know that many churches have hurt many people in the LGBTQIA community for decades and we want to give special attention and love to anyone who has been hurt. Furthermore, because 2.42 Church’s position is that a person can be LGBTQIA and a faithful Christian, it is also our position that being LGBTQIA does not disqualify a person from holding a leadership position in 2.42 Church. That's a very valid question. To be frank, we're currently in the process of leaving the church network we've been a part of since our church was planted in 2010 because we aren't satisfied with the network's responses to cases of abuse within the network. At this time, there are no guidelines mandating the usage of face masks or social distancing. We anticipate a full return to normal activities for the Fall 2021 semester. 2.42 Church is adhering to all Texas State University guidelines concerning COVID-19, and to all relevant laws set by the State of Texas. Here is a summary of the most important info you need to know: Texas Department of Safety and Health Services Minimum Standard Protocols for Individuals As a clarification - during Sunday service, homegroups, or any 2.42 Church event masks are required at all times (except those on stage) even if more than 6 feet away so that we can be consistent with TX State's campus guidelines.  If you feel that you need a breather please feel free to step outside to remove your mask and rejoin the group when you feel ready to put your mask back on. Our goal for Fall 2020 is to conduct as many church events in person as possible, so long as all above guidelines can be followed at all times. We're continually doing our best to balance our students' need for connection and community with their need for safety and health. Thanks for hanging in there with us. Continue reading for more detail and for previous statements. We recognize that. Everything sucks. We recognize that too. So, before we get around to sharing all the details of what we're wanting to put into practice, we want y'all to know that we think it all sucks. The truth is, we have no good options. No one has any good options. Regardless of what different decisions have been made at federal, state, or local levels regarding this virus, we want to acknowledge that "in these unprecedented and uncertain times..." there haven't been any good options — only variations of bad options. Some choices may have been worse than others, but all of the good options available to the world were gone the day the virus started spreading in humans. In trying to choose which options we have that are the least bad, we have some very conflicting values that we all want to preserve. The good of the individual and the good of the group, safety and freedom, economy and health. We want all of these, but we're left having to decide how much of which ones we give up for the sake of the others. We are thankful that we're not having to make these decisions for a whole city, state, or nation. However, 2.42's leadership does have to make a decision regarding our organization's expectations. We're going to follow Texas State University's policies and procedures for classrooms, open spaces, use of masks, etc., and apply them to our settings in a way that we think is consistent to all our meetings. Here are some reasons why we've decided this is a good idea. The following is a summary of two sets of guidelines. The first is from the Texas Department of State Health Services which applies to everyone at all times. The second will be the guidelines from Texas State for their campus operations that we will also be applying to all of our official meetings. Texas DSHS Minimum Standard Health Protocols for Individuals We expect all our leaders and encourage all our members to personally, both in and out of 2.42 Church events, to live by the guidelines of the state of Texas as stated above. There are more details to the actual guidelines, but what is written above are the parts that are most difficult, but most important, to follow. If you have a specific question about how to interpret one of the above items or how to apply it to your circumstances, then we encourage you to peruse the actual documentation, which is linked at the bottom of this page. If you test positive for, or become symptomatic with COVID-19, you should stay home until one of the following conditions are met: In addition to the laws of Texas, we also expect all people attending or hosting any 2.42 Church event (including Sunday services, homegroups, kickoffs, special events, etc.) to adhere to the guidelines presented by Texas State University. One last thing that we want to acknowledge is that these rules (again, not our rules) as stated are pretty inflexible, as rules tend to be. For all official 2.42 Church events, including worship services and homegroups, we will 100% adhere to the guidelines and laws above. We also recognize that people have lives outside of official church events and there could be extreme circumstances that would give us reason to disregard these guidelines. We expect the most common reason to not personally follow them will probably be related to the mental health risks of being alone. We think it's easy for all of us to say that on one end of the spectrum we would say that if one our friends or family members called us and said, "I'm having a bad mental health day and I don't think it's safe for me to be alone", we should immediately care for them in-person. The other end of the spectrum might be, "I'm bored and uncomfortable wearing a mask and don't want to follow the rules." Boredom and slight discomfort are not good reasons to contribute to the spread of the worst pandemic in a century. However, between these two endpoints is a wide grey area where it's difficult to know what to do. Should we make a person with mental health issues wait to address their loneliness until they reach a point where they are considering taking their own life? Of course not. How much boredom can a person go through before boredom becomes depression? We don't know. We're mindful that we are a church that thrives by being in close proximity with one another. We ask that groups who gather on their own (outside of Sunday Services and homegroup meetings) please use discretion and are respectful of the thoughts and feelings of one another. Some things to keep in mind concerning this wide grey area: Finally, remember that the more we follow the guidelines put out by the state and various health departments, the quicker we'll be able to get this whole situation under control and life can go back to mostly normal. We know it's hard. Life has been stressful, and nothing feels normal. We're all in this together, so let's support each other and make sure no one gets left behind. Sunday Services for the summer are being held over Zoom until further notice. Additionally, our student homegroup is meeting on Wednesday evenings over Zoom through July. Our homegroup meetings can be joined on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights via Zoom Meeting, while our Sunday services will be streamed live on YouTube beginning March 29th. While our world has been turned upside down in a short span of time, we can remain confident that God is on his throne, that these events are not a surprise to him, and that he remains the only source of hope and peace that will not falter. With yesterday's news that classes will remain online for the remainder of the semester, we can tell you that our Sunday service, and all homegroup meetings will take place in an online setting until it is safe to meet in person once again. There will not be a service this coming Sunday, March 22nd. This was a pre-planned week off to align with Spring Break. Our homegroups will begin meeting online next week with Flavor on March 24th, the J-Walkers on March 25th, and the Skyriders on March 26th. These groups will meet at their normal times. Our first Sunday service (also online) will be Sunday, March 29th. All Sunday service and homegroup meetings will take place by using Zoom meeting ([zoom.us](http://zoom.us/)). So, it's a good idea to follow the guidelines made by other organizations.  - Why Texas State? We're intrinsically tied to Texas State because of our stated mission to the students of the university. Our ministry calendar, organizational budget, and even the location of our offices, have all been determined based on our chosen association with Texas State. Not to mention the fact that 2.42 Church is the off-campus sponsor of a registered student organization: 2.42 Church On-Campus.  - Since so many of our members are students at Texas State, by committing ourselves to the same standard, our members will have a more consistent experience through this whole ordeal. They won't have to adapt to multiple guidelines or potentially have conflicting guidelines at different times.  - We hope to be able to meet on-campus in the fall for our worship services and other events. In these spaces, we'll need to follow Texas State's guidelines anyway, and it will help us to respect their space and rules if we adopt them as our own. - Masks are required whenever it is difficult to maintain six feet of separation from someone not in your own household. - No groups larger than 10 including household members. - Minimize in-person contact including maintaining six feet of separation from everyone not in your household. - Cloth face coverings are required indoors and outdoors at all times, except when alone. - Limit occupancy indoors to 50% maximum capacity. - Wash/sanitize your hands upon arrive at, and after attending, all in-person gatherings. - Stay home if you show any signs of COVID-19, or if you have had known close contact with a person who has tested positive for, and remains symptomatic with COVID-19. - Whenever possible, indoor meetings are encouraged to be conducted remotely. - Record attendance of all events. No, it's not the same, but remember, we're out of good options. - Try keeping your circle of physical connections small. Visiting with a small number of people is better than visiting with a large number of people. - Consider which people you physically connect with. Do they keep their circle small (as in the above point), or are they visiting a large number of people? It's better to personally visit people who have been more careful to keep their circles small. - Try to stretch out your in-person visits to once every two weeks. This will help to reduce the risk of passing infection along by giving yourself time to develop symptoms, get tested, and quarantine if needed, in case you do get infected. --- ## URL: https://www.242sanmarcos.org/leadership-application ### Title: Leadership Application ### Page ID: 7898309 ### Content: *Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.*  – 1 Timothy 3:1 *So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up* *until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.*  – Ephesians 4:11-13 In the verses above from Ephesians we see an overarching view of leadership in the Church.  Jesus gave the church leaders so that, ultimately, each of us becomes fully grown and mature just as Jesus himself is.  With Jesus-level maturity being the goal for each of the members of 2.42 Church we need women and men who are willing to serve and lead the way for us to all grow up into the faith.  This application is a starting point for both the applicant, the current leadership, and the whole body of Christ to take specific strategic steps toward attaining that goal. Before you get started on the application let’s go over the application process! The largest part of the application process is the Personal Growth Plan (in a separate document).  It starts with a fairly thorough self-evaluation followed by some goal-making.  But the important part (and what takes longer) is what you do with those things.  Don’t be too discouraged by how much there might be to grow in!  We don’t expect anyone in this church to be an expert at most things but it will be helpful for everyone involved to understand what our strengths and weaknesses are.  Here are some things that we will pay special attention to as we make a growth plan together and as you work out that plan. What happens when I complete my growth plan and other requirements for leadership? We’ll get with the applicant to discuss expectations of their position (Homegroup D-Team, Worship Leader, etc.) and give time to think about if it’s something the applicant feels God leading them toward.  If so then an elder in 2.42 Church will officially recognize them as a leader.  Many of the responsibilities will be similar to what is already being done but there is a noticeably increased level of commitment and expectation.  If the applicant doesn’t feel God leading them to serve in this way then we’re happy to have them continuing to serve at whatever capacity God is leading.  We think God’s church works best when we follow his direction for our roles and positions. We’ll clearly explain what areas we feel the applicant isn’t quite ready to be added onto leadership just yet.  Some may be very simple requirements such as attendance at Sunday Services that simply need to be “checked off” before the applicant can be added.  Many others aren’t quite as easy to put a “checkmark” on such as character issues – there’s not an easy scale to see if someone is “humble enough.”  In these things we will explain that either there is a lack of positive evidence of a qualification (this might be a common case for new members to 2.42 Church) or there is the presence of enough negative evidence to warrant caution.  We will provide clear expectations and feedback for the applicant to consider should they desire leadership in the future. A quick note about the questions below – at least a few of us in leadership have struggled with whatever thing you might be afraid to write down. That’s our vision statement, and if we’re serious about knowing Jesus and doing his work together, then there are some things that we as a church need to say. We are sick of racism in our country and sick of justice being denied to people who are made in the image of God. 2.42 Church of San Marcos fully and unequivocally renounces any and all expressions, directly or indirectly, of hate and racism toward Black communities. The murder of George Floyd and the mistreatment of protesters over the last few days are unspeakable, and sadly, not uncommon. The historical truth of mainstream churches reveals an uncomfortable reality that cannot go unaddressed—a long track record of being silent at best and, at worst, complicit while injustice and hatred run rampant throughout the United States. We acknowledge that most of our members – and all of our current staff team – do not understand what it’s like to grow up as a person of color in our country. Most of us are learning far too late in life, and far too slowly, just how evil our nation’s collective treatment is towards people of color. One of 2.42 Church’s core values is that through the person of Jesus Christ, we are being made complete together . We believe that all humanity is created in the image of God and that life is sacred for all, regardless of the color of one’s skin. As a church, we join together in the call for all who perpetrate race-driven violence to be brought to justice. For many years, in cities across the country, this tragic story has repeated itself far too often. At 2.42, we don’t have all the answers, but we are committed to prayerfully planning and actively responding to racial injustice. We should no longer take the liberty of “waiting for the full story.” We mourn with all families and communities who are directly affected by such injustices. We hurt for those who are traumatized once again by the actions of unloving citizens and officials. We lament the evil of racism and commit ourselves to purging it in both our hearts and our structures. To the Black community we want to say we’re sorry for everything you’ve been put through – especially at the hands of the church who claimed, and continue to claim, to know the love of Jesus. To the white Christian community who continues to commit and to refuse to acknowledge the evils being done, we beg you to let the Holy Spirit lead you to repent and to begin cooperating with his work of bringing justice to the world. To our members who are affected by these tragedies—especially our members of color—please know that you are loved by this church and a great God. We will work to protect you, fight alongside you, and love you. Your experiences will be listened to and responded to with utmost sincerity.
